After 20 GOP Presidential Debates I concluded that I didn’t know, after all, what a Conservative really is!!
Imagine my relief, when I read in the Washington Post that Jeb Bush, former Governor of Florida. both son and brother of so-called “conservative” Presidents, was similarly confused by the current political campaign.
I’m not crazy, after all!
Webster defines conservatism as a “political philosophy based on tradition and social stability, stressing established institutions and preferring gradual development to abrupt change” –
Former Republican Congress member and MSNBC Host Joe Scarborough wrote in his book, The Last Best Hope, “I want the federal government out of our pocketbooks and out of our bedrooms”! To which I say Amen, brother!!!
- “It’s the job of conservatives to conserve”
- The environment
- Tax payers tax dollars
- A capable military deterrent
- The traditional relationship between the individual and the national government
- “Conservatism implies a certain submission to reality” (Ronald Reagan)
- War and peace
- Social norms
Amazingly, after 223 years, this definition of conservatism is completely consistent with that of the Founding Fathers contained in the US Constitution.
2012 polling and the growth of registered so-called “independent voters” reveals that it’s still the majority political philosophy of the American electorate.
How corrupt, then, must be our politics that no candidate, Republican or Democrat, shares this traditional view of American government?
