President Obama, it is estimated that more than half of American voters will tune into to hear your State of the Union Report. This is, undoubtedly, the most important speech of your Presidency. It allows you to summarize what you believe are the accomplishments of your first two years in office and sets the national agenda for the next two years.
Many pundits have said it is the opening speech of your re-election campaign. I hope you don’t view it that way. This is a moment for humility and clear-sighted leadership.
We’ve all had little previews of what you will talk about:
- Jobs, jobs, jobs
- Increasing our exports by increasing our global competitiveness
- Building competitiveness through innovation
- Building innovation through education
- Energy independence
- Gratitude to our fighting men and women and their families
All of these initiatives are, by themselves laudable, but unless they are woven into the larger context of a Plan for the rest of the first half of the American 21st Century they are just that – initiatives. We have heard it all before in the State of the Union messages of every President since Nixon!
What Americans, Independents, Republicans, and Democrats, want to hear is a concrete plan to restore America – prosperous, secure, and admired. TUESDAY, JANUARY 25,2011, IS YOUR SPUTNIK MOMENT. Please don’t let us down –
